[PROBLEMS] To provide a support that has excellent dimensional stability and crack resistance and, particularly in the form of a magnetic recording medium, undergoes no significant change in dimension caused by an environmental change and can provide a high-density magnetic recording medium having a low error rate. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A support for a magnetic recording medium, comprising a metal oxide-containing layer (M layer) provided on both sides of a polyester film, the thickness of each M layer being 50 to 200 nm, characterized in that the total light transmittance of the support for a magnetic recording medium is 0 to 75%, and the surface resistivity of each face is 1 x 102 to 1 x 1013 7.
