An apparatus and a method for controlling the channel of an image display device are provided to apply the reference of an AGC level differentially according to the current state of a booster even when a channel up/down command is inputted, thereby controlling the operation of the booster selectively. A method for controlling the channel of an image display device comprises the following steps of: determining whether a channel up/down command is inputted by a user(S104); tuning a corresponding channel automatically if the channel up/down command is inputted(S105); recognizing the current state of a booster(S107); determining whether an AGC(Auto Gain Control) level fed back from a first tuner is more than a preset first reference value when the booster is on(S108,S109); and keeping the booster on when the AGC level fed back from the first tuner is more than the preset first reference value(S111).
