The device comprises a series of panels (2) which may be connected together to form a flat, rigid, elongate base (3). A pair of longitudinal frame members (4) support a tensioned elastic membrane (5) which may be coated with an ink on one of its surfaces, and are separated by two transverse frame members (6) of adjustable length. A sheet of ink-absorbent material (8) is placed onto the base, and the frame with its tensioned elastic membrane is placed over the top of the base, such that the membrane and sheet are close to each other but not in contact. The subject to be examined walks over the top of the assembly, pressing the inked membrane into contact with the sheet at the points of foot contact.
