PURPOSE: To select a compression rate with small power consumption at a high speed when the compression rate for data compression is automatically selected. CONSTITUTION: The still camera is provided with an image pickup section 25 picking up an image of an object to provide an output of analog image data, an A/D converter section 26 applying A/D conversion to the analog image data, an aperture 22 controlling an incident luminous quantity to the image pickup section 25 and a compression processing section 29 compressing image data from the A/D converter section 26 at a prescribed compression rate and also with a compression rate selection section 44 controlling a compression rate of the compression processing section 29 based on object distance by using a memory card 30 storing image data compressed by the compression processing section 29. |
