PURPOSE: To facilitate the display operation of a display device and also to prevent the useless consumption of a ROM area by eliminating the dependence on the display device for the character code system corresponding to the character pattern to be displayed on the display device. CONSTITUTION: An image output device 1 has a code table called the standard character information, for example, in a ROM 30 regardless of correspondence to the character pattern code that is previously secured by a display device. Then the device 1 controls the display messages based on the character codes stored in the code table. That is, an entry is retrieved based on the display header and the display position which are included in the display environment information, and the corresponding character string stored in the dictionary designated by the display message address of the retrieved entry is searched. Then the character strings stored in the dictionary consist of the character codes and therefore are converted into the character codes dependent on the display device of the device 1 before they are displayed on an LCD. Then the character codes are displayed on the LCD after a display device dependence code is sent to a panel control part 34. |
