A method for controlling plant growth by applying ethephon to the plants to be treated along with at least one substance having a chemical structure characterised in that it includes at least two acid functions selected from the group which includes carboxylic-type acid functions of formula (-COOH) and phosphonic-type acid functions (-PO3H2), at least one of said acid functions being the (-PO3H2) function, and said acid functions being interconnected by optionally substituted carbon chains.
