The extractor has an extractor hood (4) located in the kitchen of a building. The extractor has in addition ducts (1,2,3) from other service areas of the building. The extracted air is delivered to the exterior of the building. The hood has a separate chamber (42) to house the fan (43). This chamber has an outlet to a duct carrying stale air to the exterior and to a duct coupling the delivery chamber to the chamber (40) receiving air from the other rooms. The stale air from the cooker passes through a filter (45) at the bottom of the receiving chamber. A manually operated door (46) closes the inlet from the cooker when this is not needed. When this door is opened the fan motor is switched to high speed, to increase the air transfer.
