PURPOSE: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of increasing the hardness of a protective layer, preventing attraction and reducing initial torque applied to a motor and without causing head crash. CONSTITUTION: A nonmagnetic metallic underlayer 3, a magnetic layer 4, a middle layer 5 of hydrocarbon polymer and a protective layer 6 of diamondlike carbon are successively laminated on a substrate 11 obtd. by forming a nonmagnetic layer 2 on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 and a lubricative layer 7 of a liq. lubricant is further formed on the protective layer 6 to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium 1. The thickness of the middle layer 5 is about 30Åand that of the protective layer 6 is about 150Å. Since the middle layer 5 increases adhesive strength, it is effective in preventing film fracture, the hardness of the protective layer can be increased and head crash can be prevented.
