The seal consists of a toroid circular elastic seal element (30), surrounded by an outer metal envelope (31) and situated between the surfaces (27,28) of a seat and valve. The two surfaces form an acute angle, the size of which is related directly to the nature of the seal and the effort applied to it. The outer metal envelope is open and has a projecting tongue (32) which rests against one of the surfaces and covers a groove (33) containing a static seal. The toroid seal element can have a coating of metal such as aluminium, silver, copper, nickel or stainless steel, depending on the angle between the seat and valve surfaces and the effort to which it is subjected. <IMAGE>
