PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having satisfactory surface smoothness, excellent in output (C/N) characteristics and overwriting characteristics and not causing the deterioration of durability due to the electrification of the medium. CONSTITUTION: In the magnetic recording medium 1 with a nonmagnetic substrate 2 and plural magnetic layers 3 disposed on the substrate 2 and including a 1st magnetic layer 3a as the top layer and a 2nd magnetic layer 3b adjacent to the 1st magnetic layer 3a, soft magnetic powder and electrically conductive powder of 0.005-0.2μm average particle size are incorporated into the 2nd magnetic layer 3b. The electrically conductive powder is powder of one or more selected from among TiO2 combined with antimony oxide, SnO2 combined with antimony oxide, In2 O3 combined with tin oxide In2 O3 combined with antimony oxide, BaSO4 combined with tin oxide and ZnO.
