The protective apparatus drives or switches off technical equipment or prevents the operation of technical equipment to protect people. The apparatus is activated by a sound receiver and a processing unit to detect the cry of a person emitted in panic. In one embodiment the apparatus is designed to stop a machine. In another embodiment the protective apparatus is designed to prevent the escape of combustible gas into rooms and/or to close doors. The protective equipment may also trigger an alarm.
