The gate assembly has a pair of cylinders each including operating rods with connection links to the gate. There are tapers formed on the sidewalls (3,4) and floor surface(1a). A rotary plate is pivoted to a rear end of the floor surface so that when the tailgate is closed, a free end of the rotary plate is in contact with an internal wall surface of the gate. When the tailgate is accommodated below the floor surface of the vehicle bed, the free end of the plate is supported at an upper edge of the gate (3).
