PURPOSE: To obtain an antimicrobial material, capable of suppressing the proliferation of microorganisms in an environment and foods and widely utilizable by makingε-polylysine adsorbed on fiber, nonwoven fabric, knit or a woven fabric, a film, a sheet, etc. CONSTITUTION: This antimicrobial material is obtained by immersing the material in a small amount ofε-polylysine (an aqueous solution, an alcohol or an aqueous solution of the alcohol) or spraying the material therewith and making theε-polylysine adsorbing thereon. The antimicrobial material preferably has water absorbing properties and examples of the preferably usable material include nonwoven fabric, knit or woven fabric or paper using a natural-based fiber such as cotton, silk or wool and a fiber, nonwoven fabric, knit or woven fabric, etc., a film, a sheet, a plate, a tray or a container using polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or a polyolefin-based resin such as polyethylene or polypropylene which is a synthetic resin or a thermoplastic resin such as a polyamide or a polyester. Theε-polylysine is obtained by culturing, e.g. Streptomyces albulus subsp. lysinopolymerus which is a microorganism capable of producing theε-polylysine in a culture medium and separating and collecting theε-polylysine from the cultured product.
