PURPOSE: To obtain a nonaqueous electroviscous fluid containing a polyhydric alcohol as a polarization promoter, excellent in disperse stability and storage stability and not causing aggregation of particles even under heating conditions and developing high electroviscous effect. CONSTITUTION: This electroviscous fluid is obtained by blending silica fine particles and a polyhydric alcohol with an electrical insulating fluid, and the silica fine particles have 0.01μm to 0.5μm particle diameter and the surfaces of the fine particles are bound with the polyhydric alcohol, which contains an 8-34C alkyl group as a main chain or the silica fine particles have 0.5μm to 4μm particle diameter and the surfaces of the fine particles are bound with the polyhydric alcohol, which contains a 12-48C alkyl group as a main chain, and when the number of carbon atoms forming the main chain are defined as (n), carbon atom number between most distant hydroxyl groups is <=(n)/2 and at least one of the hydroxyl groups exists in a position of <=(n)/4 which is the carbon atom number from the terminal of the main chain. |
