PURPOSE: To provide a method for efficiently producing a synthetic quartz glass powder having a low and uniform silanol content. CONSTITUTION: This method for producing a synthetic quartz glass powder is to insert a heat-resistant structure 3 good in thermal conductivity into a silica gel powder 2 and bake the silica gel powder in placing the silica gel powder 2 obtained by hydrolyzing a tetraalkoxysilane in a heat-resistant container 1, baking the silica gel powder and thereby producing the synthetic quartz glass powder.
