PURPOSE: To obtain a rubber composition capable of improving the dispersibility of silica into a rubber and further remarkably improving the low heat build-up and abrasion resistance of a vulcanizate by blending a natural rubber and/or a diene-based rubber with silica made partially hydrophobic by specific surface treatment. CONSTITUTION: This composition is obtained by bending (A) 100 pts.wt. natural rubber and/or a diene-based synthetic rubber with (B) 10-85 pts.wt. silica made partially hydrophobic by treating the surface thereof with an organosilicon compound so that the value of A, indicating the degree of hydrophobization and defined by formula I (DBA and DBA' are each the amount of adsorbed DBA after and before the surface treatment) may satisfy 15<=A<=65 and kneading the resultant blend. Furthermore, a compound of formula II [(n) is 1-3; R is a straight-chain or a branched (un)saturated aromatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon], a low-molecular weight cyclic polysiloxane, etc., are preferred as the organosilicon compound. A silane coupling agent such asα- aminopropyltriethoxysilane in an amount of 1-15wt.% based on the component (B) is further preferably blended in the composition.
