PURPOSE: To industrially obtain melanin useful for cosmetics, chemicals, etc., with good productivity by culturing a specific microorganism having the productivity of melanin in a culture medium. CONSTITUTION: A microorganism, belonging to the genus Streptomyces and having the productivity of melanin, preferably an alkali-soluble melanin and resistance to >=500mOSMOL/kg, preferably >=1600mOSMOL/kg osmotic pressure is cultured in a culture medium to produce and accumulate the melanin in the cultured product. Streptomyces aureofaciens H-9010 strain (FERM BP-4466) is preferred as the microorganism. |
