PURPOSE: To obtain an arylphosphoric acid chloride useful as an intermediate, etc., for medicines in high yield and with little loss of starting materials by reacting a phenol with phosphorus oxychloride using a quaternary phosphonium salt as a catalyst and suppressing a production of by-products. CONSTITUTION: This arylphosphoric acid chloride, preferably a (di)aryl phosphoric acid (di)chloride is obtained by reacting (A) a phenol (e.g.; o-cresol) having substituents or no substituents on the phenol ring with (B) phosphorus oxychloride using (C) a quaternary phosphonium salt as a catalyst. It is preferable to increase a produced amount of an arylphosphoric acid dichloride by increasing the mole ratio of (the ingredient B)/(the ingredient A) and the produced amount of a diarylphosphoric acid dichloride by reducing the mole ratio. As the ingredient C, e.g. a halogenated quaternary phosphonium salt of the formula (R<1> to R<4> are each H, an alkyl orα, phenyl; X is a halogen), especially tetramethylphosphonium chloride, etc., can be preferably used.
