PURPOSE: To obtain a hair cosmetic capable of providing smoothness and pliability and having good combing property and improved in rinsing property in washing away. CONSTITUTION: This hair cosmetic contains an Nα-long-chain acylarginine branched alkyl ester of the formula [R<1> CO is an 8-22C saturated or unsaturated aliphatic acyl; R<2> is isopropyl or isobutyl] or its salt, e.g. Nα-lauroyl-L-arginine isopropyl ester hydrochloride. The compound of the formula or its salt in the cosmetic is blended in a blend ratio of normally 0.01-20wt.%, preferably 0.01-10wt.%. The cosmetic has low irritation to skin or mucous membrane and has high safety similarly to the conventional N-long chain acyl basic amino acid alkyl ester salt blend. The compound of the formula is obtained by adding a fatty acid chloride to an alkali solution of arginine to afford an Nα-long chain acylarginine and carrying out dehydro-esterification of the resultant compound in the presence of an alcohol and an acid catalyst.
