PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst which can give an olefin polymer having good particle properties in high catalytic activity by using a combination of a solid catalyst component obtained by reacting a specified magnesium compound with a specified transition metal compound with an organoaluminum compound. CONSTITUTION: This catalyst comprises a solid catalyst component obtained by reating a magnsium compound represented by the formula: Mg[R<1> (O)k ]m X<1> 2-m (X<1> is a halogen atom; R<1> is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, k is 0 or 1; l and m are each a real number of 0-2) by contact with an aluminum compound represented by the formula: AlR<2> n X<2> 3-n (X<2> is a halogen atom; R<2> is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group; and n is a real number of 0-2) and further reacting the product of contact with a transition metal compound represented by the formula (M is Ti or Zr; Cp* is cyclopentadienyl bonded to M through anηbond or the like; Z is a group containing boron, a group 14 element in the periodic table or the like; X is anionic ligand or the like; Y is a ligand containing N, P or the like and bonded to Z and M; and p is 0-4 and corresponds to the valence of M) and an organoaluminum compound.
