Optically active diphosphines of bis-1-phospha-2,3-diphenyl- 4,5-dimethyl-norbornadiene of formulae (Ia) and (Ib) are new. Also claimed are: (1) optically active diphosphine complexes of formulae (VIIIa) and (VIIIb) M = Pd or Pt; X = halo, pref. Cl; A = the residue of a chiral metallic complex of formula (VII); (2) optically active diphosphine complexes of transition metals in which (Ia) or (Ib) are ligands, prepd. by reaction of the diphosphine (Ia) or (Ib) with the transition metal in an appropriate organic solvent; (3) prepn. of (Ia) and (Ib) by resolution of a racemic mixt. of bis-1-phospha-2,3-diphenyl -4,5-dimethyl-norbornadiene comprising reaction with a palladium and/or platinum complex as a chiral auxiliary, in an organic solvent, to form diastereoisomers, and resolving these optically pure complexes; and (4) prepn. of a carboxylic acid and/or its deriv., by asymmetric hydrogenation of an alpha , beta -unsatd. carboxylic acid and/or its deriv. in the presence of an appropriate quantity of a metallic complex with a diphosphine ligand of formulae (Ia) or (Ib).
