A module (M1) in the carrier is connected to an infra-red emitter(6) in a conical socket(11), resiliently mounted(16) in the rear cab panel (13). A conical probe(21), similarly mounted(26) in the container front(23), carries a receptor (5), adjoining the emitter when the probe is fully engaged. Opt., infra-red transmissions are bi-directional. Probe and socket are secured by a transverse locking pin (30,15,25). The receptor is connected to a module(M2), controlling an alpha-numeric panel, fixed in the container rear, which automatically displays the carrier vehicle's authorised registration mark, provided by its module(M1).
