The milling machine has the milling head (12) supported on an x-y drive (9) and with a vertical drive. The two tool magazines (16,17) comprise carousels with radial slots for the tools. One magazine is for the used tools and one for the fresh tools. The magazines are positioned close to each other. To change a tool the milling head is moved to position the tool over an empty recess in the used tool carousel and the tool is released with a vertical movement of the milling head. The procedure is repeated to pick up a fresh tool from the supply magazine.
