A process and device are disclosed for manufacturing strands from round wood. The round wood is always an individual tree trunk (30). The tree trunk (30) is fed by a conveyor (50) to a chipping device (51, 52). The chipping device (51, 52) may be made to engage residual areas (33) of the tree trunk (30) that extend beyond its main body (32), so that strands may be cut out of the residual areas (33). The chipping device (51, 52) is provided with first tools (51) which cut longitudinal slots (35) in the residual areas (33, 33').
