Mass prodn. of multi-coloured sputtered coatings

Applying thin coloured layers on substrates with curved surfaces, esp. on rotationally symmetrical glass, porcelain or ceramic substrates, involves directing an ion beam on to a coating material target to cause sputtering of coating material molecules which deposit on substrates moving in a circular path about the ion source. The novelty is that the curved substrates are moved with constant angle and spacing on a vertical circuit about the ion source (3) and are simultaneously rotated about their longitudinal axes so that, during one revolution about the ion source, they pass several times through the claviform spray region (6) of molecules sputtered from the target (4), a reactive gas opt. being introduced into the region (6). Also claimed is an appts. for carrying out the above process.
