An appts. for the detection of deviations in the cross-section of a long extended product (BA) from a desired theoretical cross-section has a nipple (NI) which triggers at least one recording device (ME1, ME2) by means of a movement. The nipple is sub-divided into at least two sensor elements (FS1, FS2) which enclose the product over this cross-section and are mounted so they swivel ina manner that each, as a result of a possible cross-section deviation, triggers its associated recording device. The sensors swivel in the direction the product is drawn and in a radial direction w.r.t. product axis. There is a spring return element for each of the sensors which are fixed to swivel arms (SA1, SA2). The opening in the nipple corresp. to the desired product outer cross-section which may be circular or rectangular. The product is an electrical or optical transmission element. The recording means, i.e. inductive, capacitive, or optical sensor or mechanical switch or similar, capture the swivel movement of the appropriate arm and an analytical appts. goes with the recording means to process the recorder signals.
