An image display apparatus of this invention is an apparatus for displaying an image corresponding to an image signal. An input image signal is converted along the time base into an image signal having an aspect ratio different from that of the input image signal. An image corresponding to the converted image signal is supplied to an image display unit, thereby faithfully displaying an image corresponding to the input image signal without degrading image quality.
