In a process for composting wastes in which the compost is placed in a container and microbially decomposed, with the addition of air, the air leaving the compost during the initial phase is recycled to the compost. A device suitable for composting material consists of a sealed or sealable container in which the compost is placed bellous for blasting in fresh air and an outlet for the air. The floor of the container is pref. permeable to air. USE/ADVANTAGE - During the initial phase composting is initiated rapidly and reliably, both in summer and in winter. The air leaving the compost is warm and damp and contains CO2 and recycling this to the compost ensures that composting takes place.
