<p>A universal handle (40) for medical instruments includes a first member (58) movably disposed within a housing (56) for detachably mounting a first medical instrument (42), a bias member (114) for moving the first member (58) toward a retracted or extended position near one end of the housing (56), a locking mechanism (120) for engaging the first member (58) in the retracted or extended position to prevent the bias member (114) from moving the first member (58) into the retracted or extended position, and a releasing mechanism (36) including an operating member movable in response to a reduction in force acting on a component of the handle for triggering release of the locking mechanism (36) to permit the bias member (114) to move the first member (58). A second member for detachably mounting a second instrument (52) can be stationary or movable relative to the housing (56). Opposite ends of the handle can be configured to provide a retracting and a protruding function.</p> |
