An acoustic emission method for sonars is described. The method comprises providing the sonar with a transmission antenna (303) separate from the reception antenna (301). The transmission antenna is shaped as a linear acoustic antenna and can be towed together with a reception linear acoustic antenna, or be suspended from a helicopter (202) to form a dipping type sonar (221). Sensing by such sonars is facilitated by increasing the sound level by the directivity index, while the levels of reverberation from the sea floor and the surface of the sea are reduced.
