<p>A method for descaling a ship's ballast tank (13) comprises installing at least one non-sacrificial anode (12) in the tank, installing at least one reference electrode (22) in the tank (13), as remote as possible from the anode (12), close to the steelwork (14) but insulated therefrom; filling the tank with seawater and running it continuously to prevent accumulation of gas; impressing and increasing the current to the anode (12) until the reference electrode meter reading indicates that the potential of the steelwork (14) is at a level at which the chemical reaction created at the steelwork (14) by the impressed current isolates the scale which becomes detached.</p> |
