Absorbent structure having improved permeability

An absorbent structure for use in disposable products such as diapers comprises about 20 - 65% hydrogel-forming polymeric material, 25 - 70% wettable staple fibres and 7 - 40% wettable binder fibres, these percentages relating to the total weight of the three ingredients, and has a Z-direction permeability at 60% saturation which is no less than the figure at 30% saturation and is at least about 50 Darcy. The structure may be dry-or wet-formed. The binder fibres may be by melt-blown, e.g. from polypropylene with a hydrophilising component. The staple fibres may be natural, e.g. wood-pulp, or synthetic and may be crimped.
