PURPOSE: To obtain a hard composite reinforced by continuous filaments containing a polyester, phenol or polyamide resin matrix reinforced by continu ous p-aramide filaments coated with a solid adhesion modifier and characterized by that the filaments are embedded in the matrix and have a specific ballistic limit and a composite area density. CONSTITUTION: In a hard composite containing a polyester, phenol or polyamide resin matrix reinforced by continuous p-aramide filaments coated with about 0.2-5 wt.% solid adhesion modifier, the coated filaments are embedded in the matrix and show a ballistic limit of about 1,000-4,000 feet/sec and a composite area density of about 0.4-6 lb./square foot in a test of MIL-STD-662D. The solid adhesion modifier is a 2-perfluoroalkylethyl ester or paraffin wax or a mixture of them and the composite contains about 50-90 wt.% filaments. By this constitution, the hard composite having improved ballistic capacity, lightweight and a reduced area density is obtained. |
