Provided are a semiconductor light emitting device with improved light extraction efficiency, and a manufacturing method thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the semiconductor light emitting device comprises: a light emitting structure with a mesa structure including a first conductive semiconductor layer, an active layer, and a second conductive semiconductor layer; regularly arranged microstructures provided on the first conductive semiconductor layer around the light emitting structure; and an inclined refractive layer having refractivity smaller than that of the first conductive semiconductor layer and arranged on at least a part of the microstructures.
