Valving edges 18 formed on the connecting rod 6 control a piston port 29 connecting a chamber in the piston 9 having transfer ports (15, Fig. 12) with pressurised air from an inlet port 30 or the crankcase (Fig. 5). The exhaust port 3 may be controlled by a variable timing rotary valve (42, Fig. 25) acting as a balancing shaft in conjunction with a contra-rotating balance shaft (40).
