The air brake is fitted on the outer surface (11) of an aircraft wing (10) between a rear longeron (12) and an excessive lift flap (16). It comprises first (20) and second (22) panels placed in this order between the rear longeron and the flap. A mechanism controls the inclination of the panels to place the air brake in different states. In the closed state the first and second panels are joined and placed in the extension of the wing outer surface. In an open state the panels are joined and moved outwards at the same angle relative to the outer surface. In intermediate states the second panel is moved outwards relative to the first panel and is separated from it to form a slot (38).
