An intravascular ultrasound imaging system in which data from an ultrasonic transducer array is digitised and processed in a multi-stage pipeline. The pipeline has means to divert/extract data from one position and reintroduce it into the pipeline to enable images to be displayed retrospectively. The commands for playback are similar to those on a VCR and are shown in Figure 6. <IMAGE>
