PURPOSE: To ensure the proper stoppage of a vehicle at the time of stopping and simplify a control logic by setting a target speed at a negative value with a target speed setting means, and causing an automatic travel control means to issue a deceleration instruction when an own vehicle is stopped in relation to a leading vehicle. CONSTITUTION: This vehicular follow-up travel control device has an automatic travel control means 7 for setting the target speed of an own vehicle, so as to establish the required inter-vehicle distance depending on a distance from a preceding vehicle detected with an inter-vehicle distance detection device 3. Furthermore, the means 7 is caused to output an acceleration or deceleration instruction on the basis of the travel speed and target speed of the own vehicle detected with travel speed detection devices 9L and 9R. Then, the output of an internal combustion engine is controlled according to the outputted acceleration instruction, or a brake fluid pressure control device 8 is controlled according to the deceleration instruction. In this case, when the own vehicle is stopped in relation to the preceding vehicle, a target speed is set at a negative value, and the device 8 is controlled, so as to always apply a brake force at the time of stoppage.
