PURPOSE: To variably control damping force by controlling a flow amount of operating fluid, flowing between the first/second operating fluid chambers via a bypass passage, in the case of extending/contracting a shock absorber. CONSTITUTION: When a piston 34 and a cylinder 10 make a relative motion of extending stroke by rebounding a wheel, by decreasing the volume of an upper chamber 44 and increasing the volume of a lower chamber 46, oil in the upper chamber is moved to the lower chamber via a piston main unit 38, to generate damping force of extending stroke by a damping force generating valve 40. Similarly when the piston 34 and the cylinder 10 make a relative motion of contracting stroke by rebounding a wheel, damping force of contracting stroke is generated by a damping force generating valve 42. In accordance with increasing an opening amount of a control valve 60 by an actuator 62, since a degree of communication of a bypass passage 58 is increased, in both the extending/contracting strokes of a shock absorber, a flow amount of oil, passing through the damping force generating valve 40 or 42, is relatively decreased to gradually reduce the damping force. |
