PURPOSE: To provide a transfer material detecting device capable of detecting the presence of a transfer material on a transfer material carrier, regardless of the soiling an damaging states of the transfer material carrier and a photodetector. CONSTITUTION: The transfer material detecting device provided with detecting means 1 disposed in the vicinity of the transfer material carrier 31 rotated in a state where the transfer material 30 is attracted and receiving the reflected or transmitted light of light with which the transfer material carrier 31 is irradiated, to output a signal corresponding to the intensity of the light, a discriminating means 3 comparing an output signal in a prescribed detected part W on the transfer material carrier 31 with a prescribed threshold signal VT, to discriminate whether the transfer material 30 is stuck to the detected part W or not, a threshold setting means 4 measuring the output signal in the state where the transfer material 30 is not stuck to the detected part W where the presence of the transfer material is discriminated by the discriminating means 3, to reset the threshold VT based on the measurement and a control means 5 selectively actuating the discriminating means 3 and the threshold setting means 4. |
