PURPOSE: To prevent the crack and breakage of a catalytic body due to thermal expansion of a plane heater of a catalytic converter. CONSTITUTION: A catalytic cylinder 19 incorporates two catalytic bodies 15, 15 in which a noble metal catalyst is supported on a ceramic carrier. A plane heater 16 in which a heater is buried in a flat surface-shaped ceramic carrier is inserted between the catalytic bodies 15, 15. The surface roughness of the plane heater 16 with their surfaces coming into contact with each other is set smaller than that of the catalytic body 15. In this way, when thermal expansion difference occurs between the plane heater 16 and the catalytic body 15, slippage is relatively encountered in the contact surface between the two, and by this slippage, crack on breakage of the catalytic body 15 associated with thermal expansion difference is prevented. |
