PURPOSE: To obtain the subject polymer useful for detergents, cosmetics, etc., weak in the smell of a fatty acid alkyl ester, little in the residual amount of the fatty acid alkyl ester, and narrow in an alkylene oxide addition molar distribution by reacting the fatty acid alkyl ester with the alkylene oxide in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION: (B) A fatty acid alkyl ester is reacted with (C) an alkylene oxide in the presence of (A) calcined aluminum hydroxide, magnesium [e.g. a product produced by calcining an aluminum hydroxide-magnesium hydroxide coprecipitate of the formula: nMgO.Al2 O3 .mH2 O ((m), (n) are especially not limited, but preferably (n) is 2.5) at 400-950 deg.C] whose surface is modified with a metal hydroxide [e.g. an alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide] or a metal alkoxide [e.g. an alkali(ne earth] metal alkoxide) to obtain the objective polymer of the formula (R1 , R3 are each an alkyl, an alkenyl; R2 is an alkylene). |
