PURPOSE: To obtain a novel ester which is useful as an electroviscous fluid applicable to a power transmission device or valves, since this ester is added to a liquid-crystalline electroviscous fluid to cause large change in the physical properties such as viscosity difference between the case when an electric field is applied and an unapplied case. CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula [R is a 1-20 C (branched) alkyl], for example, bis(4-cyanophenyl) 1,10-decanedioate. The compound of the formula is obtained by esterification reaction ofα,ω-alkane-dioic acid (A1 ) with 4- cyanophenol (A2 ) in the presence of an acid or a dehydrating agent such as dicyclohexyl carbodiimide or by converting A1 to its acid chloride and allowing the chloride to react with A2 . |
