An aromatic o-hydroxyamide compound of the formula (I) <IMAGE> (I) wherein the formula: <IMAGE> is a divalent aromatic group the formula: <IMAGE> <IMAGE> R1=H, halogen, C1-10 alkyl group, or C1-alkoxyl group, Ar1, Ar2, Ar3=a divalent aromatic groups, X, Y=O or S, and n=0 or 1, has an excellent ultraviolet ray-absorption and heat-resistance and is useful for enhancing an ultraviolet ray-resistance of polymeric materials, for example, wholly aromatic polyamide fibers.
