PURPOSE: To make it possible to read the slips of all the classifications which are different in format forms by making the slips coexist without registering the format information on the slips and adding the codes for slip discrimination to the slips. CONSTITUTION: The image information on a slip PA is read by a scanner part 1. A character recognition part 2' recognizes the character data located at the reading area designated in the image information read in the scanner part 1, codes the character data and displays this coded character data as code data within the longitudinal and latitudinal coordinate axis on the display screen of a control part 3. A reading area is designated by the control part 3. From the displayed code data, desired code data is selected by designating the longitudinal and latitudinal coodinate axis.
