The use of a fluid absorbing iodophor, which iodophor comprises at least one water-insoluble hydrophilic organic carrier and at lest 100 ppm of iodine being to said carrier reversibly complexed, absorbed or adsorbed for preparation of a medicament effective in alleviating or combating periodontal inflammatory conditions, such as gingivitis and/or periodontitis, in mammals including man. The carrier comprises at least one preferably cross-linked polymerisation product. The polymerisation product swells in a polar medium, such as water or an alcohol, to form a complexed or covalently bonded gel. The reversibly complexed, absorbed or adsorbed iodine is per time unit slowly released in a pharmaceutically active amount. |
