A nappy, in particular a disposable nappy, is provided with means for detecting the degree of soiling of a test area. The detection means can comprise an indicator substance which changes colour in the event of soiling, or alternatively a sensor member with a variable which depends on the moisture content of the test area. The sensor member can be formed by electrical conductors 1, 2 which are disposed in the test area and between which the resistance can be measured to determine the moisture content of the nappy. The sensor member can be further linked to a monitoring circuit 5 which is preferably designed as a loose module and which detects whether the moisture content exceeds a specific threshold and in that case emits an optical or acoustic warning signal to indicate that the nappy needs changing. <IMAGE>
