The invention relates to an automatically cleaning pet basket comprising a cylindrical housing; a screen is secured in the housing, by means of which screen, during the cleaning phase, absorbent material which is present in the living space is separated into relatively coarse pieces which are to be separated out and relatively fine pieces, and to which screen a bin is attached, provided with an opening through which, during the cleaning phase, the relatively coarse pieces of the screen fall into the bin, while the relatively fine pieces which pass through the screen fall into a buffer chamber; the opening of the bin can be closed off by a flap which is connected to the screen. A storage vessel is also attached to the cylindrical housing, from which vessel absorbent material is introduced into the living area by means of a metering system during each cleaning phase. The packaging of the absorbent material is such that, when it is empty, it can be coupled to the discharge opening and then forms the bin.
