Syringe (1) comprises a body (2) with an internal housing, a detachable needle (4) at its distal end (3), a piston which is slidably mounted with the housing and a sleeve (20) mounted with the body, the sleeve being slidable between a position in which it extends across the body and an active position in which it surrounds the needle. The sleeve's movement is reversible and it can be retained temporarily in either position. The sleeve also acts as a guide for a cap (17) which covers the needle. The sleeve's temporary retaining elements consist of a lug (23) at the sleeve's proximal end, curving inwards and interacting with a groove in the syringe body by friction and a slight increase in the dia. of the syringe body at its distal end.
