The x-ray appts. includes an electron linear accelerator (2) which provides a beam of electrons, and consists of a linear accelerating structure (16). There is a connection allowing this accelerator to be supplied with microwaves of frequency greater than 3 GHz - preferably in the x-ray region. The electron beam impinges on a target (3) which produces a beam of x-rays from the electron beam. A protective element which attenuates x-rays surrounds the source so that the resulting x-rays only leave the target in a cone-shaped beam (4). The axis of the linear accelerator is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the support on which the x-ray source is mounted to turn about the patient.
